I Lost a Pound Today | Fit Day - Good Site to Counting Calories!

Wow, I woke up this morning weighing in at 167.  Wow!  I lost a pound, I really lost a pound on my own without fasting.  Holy Moly!  For those of you who have hypothyroidism know that is a feat!

Maybe because I kept the calories at 1339 yesterday then I did an hour of Zumba.

Btw, Terre Pruitt Nia Instructor in California gave me this great link not too long ago.

Over Three Weeks | There Are Major Improvements | Farmer's Market Tomato Recipe

Well, I am still 168lbs!  I started at 178lbs, but I lost the 10lbs from fasting.  The good news though is I have kept that weight off, I have not gained that weight back.  Now I want to get to 150lbs and will be happy with that.  I don't need to be a skinny chick. I don’t need to be 98lbs again wearing zeros.   I like a little meat on me, but I don't like the threat of diabetes.  I don't like that.  My whole intention is to be healthy.  Die at 80 something, not 40 or 50 something.
The improvements though are fantastic!  My mind is so much clearer and more focused now.  I love that!  I was getting so tired of saying, "What's the word, you know the word I am looking for."  I was tired of forgetting people’s names, people I even knew for quite some time.  What's the deal with that?

So, I am pretty confident between the fast and losing the gluten I am making strides with my mental health.  However, I have not lost the weight I desired, I was hoping for at least 1 to 2lbs a week.  That would be fabulous. I am keeping the calories between 1200 - 1800 a day.  I am working out 3 - 5 times a week.  Being a mom, or a good mom per se, I am fairly active with my son.  So, I have decided that I am going to fast once a month for 1 - 2 days for the next two months and see what happens.  It's all an experiment at this point.

I'm ecstatic about my mind though, I was so tired of being such a dingbat.  It was getting out of control and it's this bad at 40 I "was" do dreading 50 and 60.  Now I am more confident.

So, anyways a good recipe I made today.
I went to the farmer's market yesterday and got me a juice red ripe tomato and orange tomato.

Cut tomatoes up into chunks
 Add some chopped onion
 Tablespoon of Olive Oil
 Pinch of garlic
 Pinch of oregano
 Pinch of Salt
Two turns of the Black Peppercorn
Teaspoon of the Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar
 1/2 Teaspoon of "Local" Honey.

Toss! Then enjoy!!!  Yum, so good!

The Boonies and a Dedication To An Abbot.

Well, I had to go backwards and will start over again next week.  See what happened was, I had to travel to the boonies this weekend, and in this particular area all restaurants were closed early and we had to depend on the Hampton to feed us.  Well, so, there were meatballs, crackers, carrots, chicken noodle soup and beef noodle soup. Yikes!  You know meatballs has bread and I was starving, so needless to say, I was desparate and just thought of Neem Karoli Baba who always said, "You eat what is available."

So, I wanted to talk about my trip, it was at Zen Mountain this past weekend. I went to a Zen Ritual for Abbot Steve Clark where we scattered his ashes to the wind on top of a mountain.

Steve was one of my best friends, we would spend days upon days and hours upon hours in Satsang, spiritual talk, for years.  Until I quit my job and went to school full-time and then at some point I got pregnant and then he grew very sick and then died this year.

It's interesting about Steve, the one conversation that stood out the most about Steve was his want and desire to serve.   He came into my editing bay one time and he sat in the chair and slumped over and sighs, and I asked, "What's wrong man?"  He says to me, "Tiner, all I want to do is serve."  He said this out of frustration in trying to connect with our co-workers.  Now, to me that's like pulling teeth really, but he really wanted to reach out to them and connect with them and help them. But, they wanted no part, of course.  But, this is what this man wanted to do, he wanted to help people.  Now-a-days you try to help people and people think it's a con.  But, this man was all about the alleviation of suffering.  Since I knew him, he was all about the alleviation of suffering.  Not just his own, as he has suffered for some time. He had hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis when we working together and I would hear him whence and scream on occasions when he would make the simplest of moves.  So, I often would suggest things to help him through that, so he played with tai chi for a while then he found the Cincinnati Zen Center.

He hooked up the Cincinnati Zen Center and became close with that group.  Which is wonderful news, because he needed it so much. He was challenged to work through his anger and his pain.  So, he would sit  still through those bouts of anger and hurt forced upon him by his unsympathetic co workers.  He would sit his mind became clear, his intentions became clear.  And I know, because I was constantly trying to get him out of that job because I know how those people worked and they would suck the life out of you. But, he assured me that the Zen helped him through it. It's amazing what meditation can do.  He's been pulling me closer to Zen Meditation, but you know how it is, full time mom, kid latch to you every moment of the day.

Anyways, he became the Abbot for the NKY Zen Center and became close with the group and helped so many people, I am truly, truly happy he got to do what he wanted to do which was to serve.

So as for the diet!  After the ritual there was mostly meat, potatoes, lots of breads. So, it was a "person who could potentially have celiac disease" nightmare.  The good news, despite the fact that I am still fairly fatigued, I managed to keep of 7 of the pounds I have lost.  That's good news!  The bad news is, I am pretty tired.  I feel the fatigue in my body.  Where last Friday, Saturday and Sunday I felt fantastic, by Tuesday I felt horrible.  It took a few days for that bad diet to catch up for me.  So, I know, for sure, that I must live a gluten free life. Plus, pack my own foods!

Day 4 | Sooo, Just how much protein and fat should I eat a day?

So, before I taught a class tonight.  I had an avocado.

Avocado:  1 cup sliced.
Calories 234
Fat 21g
Protein 3 g.

Then later this even -  I had two pieces of Udi Gluten-free bread.  Toasted.
Serving Size = 150 calories. 4 - Grams of fat. 4g of Protein and 1g of Sugar

1 slice of tomato =  5 calories.
Drizzle of Olive oil = 40 calories, 5 grams of fat and 0 protein.

Pinch of cheddar cheese.  I know, I know I wanted to stay away from that.  Oh well.  But, it's hard to measure this one.

An ounce of cheese is 113 calories and I had a pinch so, I am going to say a third of 113.

Calories 40
Fat 3 g
Protein 2.3

Today's Total:
Total Calories.  879.12
Total Fat:  59
Total protein:  26.3

Shoot.  I didn't even hit the 60 gram mark for proteins.

Ummm.....   The protein thing is hard.  Well, it's 10pm - I'm not sure if I should eat something or not.

Umm... Maybe I should eat some nuts.

Ok, did some online research:

So how many grams of protein should I eat in a day?
There are 4 calories in a single gram of protein. Therefore 180 – 630 calories in terms of grams of protein would be roughly 45 – 157.5 grams of protein. Here’s a list of protein calories and grams you should be eating depending on the calories in your diet:
§  If you’re on a 1200 calorie diet, 120-420 calories (30-105 grams) of protein are recommended.
§  If you’re on a 1400 calorie diet, 140-490 calories (35-122.5 grams) of protein are recommended.
§  If you’re on a 1500 calorie diet, 150-525 calories (37.5-131.25 grams) of protein are recommended.
§  If you’re on a 1600 calorie diet, 160-560 calories (40-140 grams) of protein are recommended.
§  If you’re on a 2000 calorie diet, 200-700 calories (50-175 grams) of protein are recommended.

I am way under. Now it's my understanding if you are way under you will not lose weight either and you develop malnutrition.

I am going to eat 1/4 of cup pistachios and call it a night.  There is nothing I can do until I get some hemp nuts.

1/4 of a cup =
Calories - 160
Fat - 14g
Protein 6grams.

Total for Today:
1039.12 Calories
Fat - 73g
Protein 32.3.

I didn't make the right calorie though.  I think I am doing well on fats, let's search shall we.

  1. Write your body weight in the equation that fits your activity level and gender. Then, multiply.
    1. Moderately active male:
      _____ pounds x 15 calories = _____ total calories per day.
    2. Moderately active female:
      ____ pounds x 12 calories = _____ total calories per day.
    3. Relatively inactive male:
      ____ pounds x 13 calories = _____ total calories per day.
    4. Relatively inactive female:
      ____ pounds x 10 calories = _____ total calories per day.
  2. Take total calories and multiply by 30 percent.
____ calories per day x .30 = ____ calories from fat per day.
  3. Take calories from fat per day and divide by 9 (there are 9 calories per gram of fat):
____ calories from fat per day divided by 9 =____ fat grams per day.

   2040 calories X 30% = 612
612/9 = I should have 68 grams of fat a day.  So, I'm a bit above on the fat and below on calories and protein is good thanks to pistachios.   Good thing it was mostly good fats.  Like the avocado is a good fat, so good fats bad fats, something to talk about tomorrow.

Night!

Day 4 - Lunch

Well, we went for a walk and now about to have a salad. So, I want to record what I am eating.

Baby Romaine Lettuce - 2 cups make 15 calories and 1 protein and 0 fat.  So, I'm like do I count this if I only use 1/2 of a cup.  So, 3.75 calories.  .25 for protein.

What's left of the hemp nuts. See the image to the side and you figure out the calories.

Mango Peach Salsa.  4 Tbsp is 50 Calories

1 Tablespoon of Sunflower Seeds.  Now for an oz of sunflower seeds, I'm doing less than an oz.  But the calories for Sunflowers for an oz is 163 calories, Fat 14g, Protein 5 Grams.

In 1 oz there are 2 Tbsp.  You do the math. I'm lazy.  LOL.

So, this morning calories total: 303.75
Fat: 19 grams
Protein: 10 grams of protein.

Add in lunch,

Calories:  110.25 not included the small sprinkle of hempnuts.
Total Calories.  410.12
Fat:  7g
Total Fat:  26 grams of fat.
Protein.  7.25 grams.
Total protein:  17,  Not even reaching my half way mark for protein.  In need to find another protein source.  I don't want to add meat or cheese yet.

I think I need to make a stop at the Clifton Natural Food store to get more hemp nuts.

Day 4 | Breakfast | Protein and Link to Nutrition Data

So, today,

I am starting off with 1 piece of Udi's Gluten free bread toasted with a drizzle of olive oil.
(Serving Size = 150 calories. 4 - Grams of fat. 4g of Protein and 1g of Sugar.) So, I guess I ate half of that.

For the Olive Oil - a drizzle which is around a tsp = 40 calories, 5 grams of fat and 0 protein.

With a 1/4 of a cup of cashews. (Serving Size = 1/4 of a cup is 170 Calories 14 Grams of fat. 5 Grams of protein.)

1 small Banana = 90 Calories | 0g of Fat and 1 gram of protein.

Squeezed Orange Juice with a 1/2 of squeezed lime juice. = Around 20 Calories, 0 fat.

To find out calories of certain foods - go to the following link.
http://nutritiondata.self.com/

So, this morning calories total: 300
Fat: 19 grams
Protein: 10 grams of protein.

Now for protein - According to my cousin the average person should have at least 60 grams of protein.

Not sure how much fat I should take in - I'll have to look into that one later.

Now, I am not sure how much calories I should take in a day, but if I want to lose the weight. I should probably stick to about 1200 kilocalories a day.

I can't believe I am 168 though, I am hoping this is more than just water.

Day 4 -Measuring your Waist | Still Losing Weight

Down to 168 lbs - Monday I was 174 lbs.  So, I managed to loose 6 lbs since Monday.  Which seems awful fast for me.

Yesterday I started to eat salads.  Couldn't eat much at all.  Which I am glad to hear.  Today, I tried to measure myself and I don't think I am measuring right.  So, I am looking it up online.

According to the above it's right at your belly button.

Now bing has an impressive animation that  shows you where to measure.

Check out this great MSN video: How to Measure Your Waist

Now both indicate I am at 38 inches. So, and that I am high risk. My abs are strong, I am always working my abs. I hear this often - I can work my abs till I am blue in face. It still won't get rid of the weight. So, hopefully being gluten free will help with this.

Well, that's all for now folks!

Day 3 - More Energy | Less Stiffness

Today, I do not feel as tired as I usually do and as I woke up this morning I noticed less stiffness in my legs.  As a matter of fact it was easier to get up this morning.  Now the past two days they were excessively stiff.  Actually, my whole body was excessively stiff.  It's the toxins that make the muscles stiff, they get worse when you are fasting as the toxins are being released.  Speaking of toxins, I still have my rash on my face and would like to scratch it very much.

I weigh 169.2 lbs but my waist went up 1/2 an inch.  So, either I did not measure myself right yesterday or I that pinch of salt bloated me a bit.   So, when I started this Monday I weighed 174.2 and I lost a total of 5 lbs.  This is the first time I saw anything below 170 in 5 years.  Even when I was working out 7 days a week and eating salads.  Note:  The salads may have included dressings and bread crumbs that had gluten in them.  It's amazing what you can find gluten in.

Anyways, I was just asked to sub for tomorrow and Saturday, so I have to break my fast.  I've read numerous times that it's not wise to workout strenuously while fasting.  Generally it is due to being light-headed and dizzy.

Breakfast:  Hemp nuts and pineapple.
Lunch: Salad with Avocado, tomato, zucchini and cranberries with nuts. Dressing: Olive Oil with Lemon
Dinner: Salad with Avocado, tomato, zucchini and cranberries with nuts.  Dressing: Olive Oil with Lemon

Tomorrow I may introduce some gluten free bread.

Then next monday, I am going to fast again but only for a few days.

Day 2 - Hypothyroidism | The G Free Diet | Then there is Candida

The purpose of my blog, "So, You have Hypothyroidism and You Can't Loose Weight," is to find a way for me to log my progress in loosing weight.  I've started with a fruit/vege fast with only hemp nuts as my protein nearly 2 days ago.  I've so far lost 3.2 lbs.  Then after the fast - transition to a gluten free diet. The fast is to help me detox then enter a new lifestyle.  So, far I have been successful with a few minor issues, headache, vomiting, and light headedness. Since I started vomiting today and to stay on the vege/fruit fast - I decided to eat some fruits and vegetables, like tonight I had pineapple and avocado with a pinch of salt.  Avocado being a good sugar regulator.  Salt should not be omitted from someone's diet, people have died from omitting salt from their diet. So, a pinch is good.  But, I started to eat a few things because of the stomach acid and vomiting - tis is not good.

Well, a friend of mine suggested today for me to take a test to see if I had Candida...  It's an online test...

http://www.naturdoctor.com/Chapters/Quiz/CandidaQuizW.html

My results are:
Total score is 1312
A score of over 500 is significant for Candida!
You should seriously consider seeing a qualified naturopathic physician.
This is very helpful because although there are many natural products for Candida, remember that for naturopaths Candida is considered to be a symptom of some underlying disorder.

I am thinking Candida and Gluten come hand in hand.  However, my known disorder is hypothyroidism.  Now, I found out recently that people who have hypothyroidism have a tendency to either have gluten allergies or become gluten intolerant.  I found this out via the book, "The G Free Diet" by Elizabeth Hasselbeck.  yes, she is the lady from "The View" that most liberals hate.  She also was on "Survivor" which is where she discovered she has celiac disease.

In the book it states that untreated celiac disease can cause thyroid problems.  People who have hypothyroidsim have a tendency to get celiac disease.  So, I noticed if I eat anything with gluten in it I grow highly fatigued.

People with celiac disease are more likely to have:
Good times, good times.  Sheesh.  So, I am imagining if we got away from all things that cause celiac disease, perhaps I wouldn't have Hypothyroidism. That is a hypothesis of course.

Here are celiac disease symptoms:
Chronic fatigueOne of the most common celiac symptoms.
WeaknessOne of the most common celiac symptoms.
DizzinessAbout 5% of celiac patients get nerve damage that can vary from tingling and numbness in the feet to confusion, memory loss, dizziness and loss of balance, visual abnormalities. This sometimes happen in the absence of GI symptoms. Epilepsy (with calcification in the brain) does respond when gluten is fully removed.
HeadachesCommon celiac symptom.
Cold sweats and/or night sweatsHave never heard of it as a celiac symptom.
Feeling bad all over, like having the fluTypical celiac symptom, to the extent one thinks of flu as diarrhea, weakness, and muscular/bone aches and pains.
Muscle and joint painsCommon celiac symptom.
Sore throatNot generally considered a celiac symptom, but I have heard reports from a few members of a support group. Also have heard about swollen glands in the neck.
Low grade feverNot a known celiac symptom.
Numbness, especially in the hands or feetSee dizziness above. Another celiac symptom is called peripheral neuropathy (possibly due to folic acid deficiency). Also abnormal or impaired skin sensation (paresthesia), including burning, prickling, itching or tingling. Also the celiac FAQ lists central and peripheral nervous system disease.
AsthmaCeliacs are more susceptible to having allergies, possibly due to a deficiency of magnesium.
Chronic sinusitisCeliacs are more susceptible to sinus problems.
AllergiesCeliacs are more susceptible to having other food intolerances and allergies.
IrritabilityCommon celiac symptom.
Abdominal painCommon celiac symptom.
Constipation or diarrheaBoth common celiac symptoms.
GasVery common celiac symptom.
Chronic athlete's foot or jock itchNot known as a celiac symptom, but celiacs would be a weakened host for fungi.
Yeast rashesWhat does a yeast rash look like? Some celiacs have had eczema and hives clear up when going gluten-free. Also 5% of celiacs get dermatitis herpetiformis, which is very itchy rash which is most commonly on the outside of elbows, knees, top of buttocks, or on the back shoulders, neck and scalp.
Feeling worse when deprived of sugar containing foods or simple carbohydrates such as potatoesAn undiagnosed celiac can have food cravings as they are malnourished.
Feeling weaker on damp days or after bathingNot a celiac symptom.
Feeling worse when exposed to mold, dust, chemicals, or pollutantsCeliacs are more susceptible to having allergies.
Elevated Epstein-Barr virus titers, indicating a recent reactivation of the virusDon't know.
Heart painsNot known as a celiac symptom. However, with severe anemia, there are often uncomfortable heart palpitations. Also, I suppose heartburn could be a symptom as some celiacs vomit after gluten consumption.
General reproductive problemsInfertility is a known celiac symptom in both sexes. It is due to malnourishment. Also gynecological disorders like spontaneous abortions.
Chronic vaginal infectionsDon't know, but the host body is weakened.
Premenstrual syndrome like symptomsAnecdotally a celiac symptom.
Irregular menstrual cycles or unusual menstrual painUntreated celiac women often have low estrogen levels and an erratic or non-existent menstrual cycle (amenorrhea). For young untreated celiac girls, the onset of menarche can be delayed. Women with a long history of malabsorption will sometimes reach menopause at a younger age; in some cases as early as in their late twenty's. Anecdotally unusual menstrual pain is a celiac symptom.

Interesting stuff eh?

Day 2 – Eek, I’m Nauseated | Then There is Temptation

Ok, it was around 12:15pm when I hurled up a lot of stomach acid.  My stomach feels super, super nauseated.

Around 1:00pm - A sharp pain came over my stomach as if I was going to get sick.

I came home and ate a teaspoon of hemp nuts for protein.  Ugh, I don’t know if I can make it if I am going to be sick.   So, I am going to drink some water and then sit on the couch.

My head feels light-headed.

Shame on me, I know I should have done it, but I lost 3lbs already.  I don’t know if losing weight so quickly is a good idea.   So, I may cut this out on day 5 and then initiate my gluten free diet.

Temptations- A friend of mine called me and to tell me that she made home made cinnamon rolls from scratch. However, what really really tempted me, was when mom talked about heirloom tomatoes.   I started to fantasize of a slice of a tomato on Udi's bread toasted, topped with a drop of olive and then mozzarella cheese.  Or maybe melted on the tomato.  Or put it on the grill.  Oh baby.

Sheesh...

Day 2 - I feel pretty good, but I have a rash.

Its day 2 and really I have no complaints except for a rash on my face.  I think I read somewhere that if rashes appear on your body; your body is releasing toxins in your body.  So, today's rash is light.

Then I just read on Webmd there is no scientific proof that this is true, but I am going to say something about that statement.  I hear Doctor Oz say this all the time, "There is no scientific proof."  Just because there is no scientific proof today, doesn't mean "a discovery" for that answer won't come in the future.  Our bodies are our own lab as Debbie Rosas puts it when she discusses on Becoming a Sensation Scientist.   http://nianow.com/telecourse/public/2011/02/07/becoming-a-sensation-scientist

I measured two fingers below my belly today and it's 38.5 inches.  So, I already lost an inch and a half.  I'll try testing my weight Friday.  Now I do have anxieties about testing my weight because it's always a big disappointment for me when I do not loose the weight.  So, weight scales are on the back burners.

So, for breakfast -  Sweet Greens Smoothie

1/2 cups water
1/2 cup peeled chopped cucumber
1 cup of fresh spinach
1 cup of frozen strawberries

Blend!

Day 1 - Smoothie Recipe for Dinner

I went for a Smoothie for Dinner to keep me filled.  Here is the recipe.

2 medium oranges peeled, halved.
10 small frozen strawberries.
1 small banana.
1 gala apple, quarted.
2 cups of spinach
1 teaspoon of hemp nuts and
2 cups of water.

Put it in the vitamixer and smoothie it out for 45 seconds.

Then enjoyed.  This is pretty tasty.

So, far I still feel light headed, I almost feel like I'm in another dimension or something crazy like that.  Maybe reality feels different.  Could be all in  my head or maybe doing this changes how we see things.  I dunno.  It's just day 1.

I do feel apprehensive.  If I could just make it to Day 5, I will be happy, because that will be a great detox. But if I feel strong, I'm shooting for 10 days and if I feel stronger then, I will shoot for the 60 days.  We'll see.

Day 1 - Beginning of a New Era #hypothyroidism #chronicpain #disease

Hello World! My name is Tina and I have had hypothyroidism for 11 years now, and like with all chronic diseases, it's a burden or a blessing that you must live with.

This particular disease has caused me chronic muscle pain, stiffness, fatigue, weight gain, inability to lose weight, brain fog, depression, constipation, hair loss, and my hubby's personal favorite, irritability.

I take a Levothyroxine 125 mcg which is a generic form of Levoxyl 125 mcg. I was put on a higher dosage after I had my son three years ago. This has caused me super irritability, muscle stiffness, forgetfulness and a new one for me, anxiety.

I wanted to create a blog about my diet change, and lifestyle and log the changes that have happen and the reactions that may occur.  Today, at 11, I am going to go to the doctor, tell him what I plan on doing which is a fast.  I got this idea from a movie called,  "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead."

My intentions is to do this fruit/vege fast for the next 5 days, see how I feel then shoot for 10.  If I still feel ok, I am going to shoot for the whole 60 days that the guy who produced this movie did.    Joe Cross is his name and here is his website:  http://www.fatsickandnearlydead.com/

This is what I currently look like from the side.  Pretty sexy, huh?  Of course, I was on my period that day.  I know, you didn't need to hear that, but the extra bloating comes from that too.

We were in the Northside Fourth of July Parade.  Now dig this, I work out, I am both a Nia Instructor and a Zumba Instructor and work out nearly 4 days a week.  Mostly dancing.  Just was certified Pilates via YogaFit and I am looking forward to teaching that 2 times a week.

I eat primarily vegetarian, (Note: which included alot of pasta | more on this later) So, besides being a mom and chasing my kid around, I am fairly active.  Yet, I do not lose weight.  But, now I am trying something different.  I am trying this fast to kick off my gluten free lifestyle.   Today is my first day.

For breakfast, I had a green juice with 1/2 of a cucumber, handful of spinach and a bunch of green grapes.  It's not too bad.

For lunch, I ate 1 teaspoon of hempnuts,  and then juiced 1/2 of a cucumber, handful of spinach, handful of blueberries, bunch of florets of broccoli and a bunch of green grapes.

Dinner, I'll probably do the same.

So, I went to the doctor's today, told him what I am doing and he pushed the protein.  I said I was eating hempnuts and he was fine with that.  I'm not entirely sure how much protein I am supposed to have but I figure a few teaspoons should suffice.

Right now, I feel a little light-headed, but not starving like most people would say.

So, my weight today is 174.2 lbs and my waist is as 40 in.  This is two fingers down from my belly button.   I will weigh myself again this Friday.  Check my waist every day.  Not going to stress myself about weight because I know, I have hypothyroidism; I may not lose weight at all.  Now I did find out that I am borderline diabetic.
So, I need to make some changes quick.

So, we will see as this is a total experiment.  Wish me luck!
